Bringing Clarity To Chaos
Latest Podcast
Our Great Coach this week is Shane Beamer, an American Football Coach.
Shane began his coaching career in the year 2000 after ending his playing career with Virginia Tech. Beginning with his time working at Georgia Tech as a Graduate Assistant, Shane’s coaching career has seen him hold positions with the University of Tennessee, Mississippi State, the University of Georgia and the University of Oklahoma, whom he led to win 3 Big 12 Championships.
In 2020, Shane was appointed as the Head Coach for the University of South Carolina. In his first year with the team they won the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, and Shane has cemented his place in South Carolina history as the first coach to win back-to-back games against top-10 teams.
Shane is someone who believes (and personifies) the power of consistency, particularly when it comes to emotions. In our interview he spoke about the power of not being afraid to show your ‘human side’, and the role that the people around you play in helping to achieve this.
Other highlights from the interview included:
His fascinating approach to learning through note-taking, and how the focus of his reflection has always been to better prepare for the future roles he was targeting.
His thoughts on high performing teams and the thought-provoking sign that he has hanging in the changing rooms for his team to see.
His own experiences of self-doubt, and what they have taught him about leadership.
Finally, related to that final point, I would like to shine a light on the way that Shane summarised leadership during our interview:
“A leader brings clarity when there’s chaos, a leader brings calm when there’s frustration, a leader brings peace when there’s doubt, a leader brings belief, and when there’s adversity, a leader brings purpose”.
Do you agree?
Where Purpose and Culture Combine
When Professor Eric and I interviewed Great Coach Shane McLeod for our podcast, something that he said really challenged the way I thought about the role of purpose in building a team culture.
Shane is the man who took the Belgium National Hockey team from a ranking of #15 in 2015 to an Olympic Gold medal in 2020. In this clip he explains how a “hundred little things build a culture”, and how purpose underpins everything he and his players do.
Shane’s words left me reflecting on the fact that purpose always comes first and that an authentic purpose will act as the foundation for the team culture. With that said, it can be difficult to find a purpose statement that can unite everyone in a team, family, or organisation.
I’d love to know — what purpose drives your team?

On A Billion Dollar Mind
Did you catch our Wednesday episode of the podcast this week?
We were joined by two fantastic guests, tennis coach Rick Macci and neurologist Dr. Nivedita Jerath, to discuss their brand new book called “Billion Dollar Mind: A Practical Guide to the Game of Life”.
From the mental toughness-boosting practices featured in the book to what Dr Niva learned from her time speaking with and observing Rick, this turned out to be a really fantastic interview highlighting the power of both the mind and the coach.
