Leading Across Cultures: Naeimeh Zafar

There Is No Algorithm for Leadership

From Iran to leading national teams across four countries, Naeimeh Zafar has built a remarkable international coaching career. Along the way, she has learned that leading across cultures requires more than technical knowledge. It demands humility, adaptability and the ability to understand what matters to the people you lead.

3 TAKEAWAYS

1 — Resilience is built in the absence of support.

With her father unable to attend games and her mother expecting her to stop playing after high school, Zafar learned early to build belief from within. That self-reliance became the foundation of an international coaching career across seven countries.

2 — Cultural adaptation is a coach's greatest tool.

Whether praying with her team in Qatar or visiting Buddhist temples in Vietnam, Zafar discovered that embracing local customs built trust. Leading across borders meant understanding the culture before trying to influence it.

3 — Performance speaks louder than perception.

Zafar has faced resistance simply because she is a woman including being told, “we cannot work with a woman for the men’s team.” Rather than allowing those perceptions to define her, she let her results challenge them.

3 Questions to Take With You

❝

1. Where does cultural adaptation sit within your skillset?

2. Where have you let your perceptions judge a situation prematurely?

3. What examples do you have of your leadership adaptability?

Reflect. Discuss. Apply.
