This week’s Great Coach is Jill McIntosh, former Australian Diamonds player turned team coach.

Like many of the Great Coaches that we have spoken to for our podcast, Jill’s sporting success hasn’t just been limited to coaching; in 1981 she was named New Idea Australian Netballer of the Year, and in 1983 she won the 1983 World Netball Championship as a member of the Australian national team.

In 1990, Jill became the head coach of the Australian under-21 team; throughout her time as a player she had stepped in as the coach of several of the teams she had played for, including the Bull Creek Netball Club. With this early experience under her belt, it wasn’t long before she found herself taking the position of Netball Australia’s national coaching director, and as the head coach of Australia (who she guided to 88 victories and a 94% win rate).

Jill coached the Australian national team to the championships in 1995 and 1999, as well as to gold medals at the 1998 and 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Expanding her career internationally, Jill has coached the national teams of Singapore, Jamaica and Northern Ireland. Currently, she acts as the Head Coach of the UK Super League team, the Cardiff Dragons.

In 2020, Jill McIntosh was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

When it comes to coaching thriving teams Jill has decades of hands-on experience, and she shared some of her insights to my co-host, Professor Eric Knight, and I during our interview.

Some key highlights include:

  • The difference between knowing what you want and knowing “how” to achieve it, and how this can become a coach’s downfall

  • The ‘rule of excellence’ that Jill uses to guide all team activities

  • The importance of getting ‘in sync’ as a team, and how she goes about moulding teams in order to achieve this

Thriving Teams: Free Diagnostic

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be focusing on how the Thrive model can help you to lead thriving teams.

To help you really connect and benefit from the Thrive model, we have created a free, simple diagnostic which uses 18 questions to identify how close your team is to thriving, and (importantly) what can be done to improve.

Thriving Workshops

In addition to the podcast episodes and diagnostic tool, we’re taking things even deeper with our Thriving Teams workshops, offered both virtually and live. Some workshops can even include the participation of the Great Coaches that we have interviewed.

For leaders who really want to move their teams closer to Thriving, we’re also offering individual coaching sessions.

Leadership Insights

How would you define a successful sporting coach?

Usually, the success of a coach is defined in terms of how many championships or finals their teams/athletes have won, and how many accolades or ‘Coach of the Year’ awards they have decorating their walls and shelves at home.

According to Dr Jerry Lynch, however, the most important game of a coach’s career is one that you may not expect.
