Inside the Ring with British Boxing Coach Ben Davison

Unlocking the insights of leadership from the lessons of high-performance sport coaches. Joining us is World Champion Boxing coach Ben Davison

We believe sport provides a learning environment for leadership and life, and so we interview Great Sports Coaches from around the world to find ideas to help us all be better people.

Our newsletter provides the best ideas from those interviews. We hope you find one or two ideas that you can share with your family, friends, and teams.

Our latest Great Coach interview is with British Boxing coach, Ben Davison.

At just 29 years of age, Ben is an outlier in the world of Boxing coaches, who have often toil away for decades before experiencing the type of success Ben has enjoyed.

In 2017 he joined up with Tyson Fury and helped him return to the ring and set out on the journey that would ultimately see him claim the WBC Heavyweight championship.

Ben has gone on to work with other world champions including Billy Joe Saunders and the undisputed world champions Josh Taylor, Devin Haney, and Leigh Wood.

On the topic of On Energy, Gavin speaks about how energy has both a physical and psychological element; and how being able to renew your energy in both of those areas is critical as a leader.

One of featured coaches in our soon to be released On Energy episode is South African Rugby coach, Heyneke Meyer.

Heyneke has had a remarkable coaching career, rising quickly to become the Head Coach of the Blue Bulls rugby team from 2000 leading them to the Sth African championship four times and to a Super Rugby championship in 2007. In 2012, he was appointed as Head Coach of the South African National Rugby team, the Springboks.

Heyneke is a passionate, honest and a master motivator. His energy is infectious and he conveys this through storytelling and metaphor to distill the essence of his messages in a powerful way. Our full interview with Heyneke is available here

In this old sales training video from the iconic coach Vince Lombardi, he talks about your second effort, and not giving up so easily. In some parts it looks quite old (the brusque attitude and the language) but in others it seems fresh and up to date (the focus on rebounding).

Your second (and third and fourth) efforts define you in sport. And it’s no different in school or work. There does of course come a point when you must walk away and move on; but that is very rarely after the first try.

Figuring out the amount of effort you want to ask of people; or as coach Lombardi puts in; the price you are willing to pay; is a one of those leadership tasks that changes every day. It takes effort and poise and it’s never easy.

We believe that while there may be no algorithm for leadership, but there is a way to align your values, vision, and behavior to excel and elevate your leadership.
