Our Great Coach this week is American Football coach Brian Bohannon.

Brian began his coaching career as an Assistant at Gardner-Webb in 1996, then over the following 17 seasons progressed through roles with Georgia Southern, Navy, and Georgia Tech.

In 2014 Brian became the inaugural Head Coach for Kennesaw State, leading the team to become the best five-year start-up program in college football history. Along the way he has won 3 Big South Coach of the Year awards and the AFCE Coach of the Year award, all the while leading his team to two Big South Conference championships.

This was a really interesting interview that touched on a number of important leadership topics, including several that we have highlighted on our podcast and in our newsletter in recent months.

Some highlights include:

  • Brian’s definition of ‘mental toughness’ as being the ability to execute a simple task regardless of circumstance, and the way that he structures his team’s culture to help re-enforce this

  • The story he shares about starting his team from scratch and building it to be the most successful 5-year start-up program in college football history

  • His belief that the number one thing all Great Coaches share is the ability to take a group of people from various backgrounds and get them all to buy into a common vision and goal

As always I would love to hear your thoughts on the interview - especially if you’re planning to try out some of Brian’s insights and tips with your own team.

Thriving Teams

Our Thriving Teams podcast series may have come to an end, but our enthusiasm for sharing the Thrive model with our listeners prevails.

The Thrive model encompasses six integral elements for achieving the success and well-being of teams, and we feel that it aligns well with all of the leadership insights and advice that we’ve gathered from over 200 interviews with Great Coaches from across the world of sports.

To help you make the most of the Thrive model and uncover new ways to lead your own team we created our free, simple diagnostic which uses 18 questions to identify how close your team is to thriving, and (importantly) what can be done to improve. So many of you have already given it a shot - if you haven’t tried it yet, then click the link below to find out more:

Additionally, we’re also offering virtual and live workshops focusing on the integral elements of team success (with Great Coach participation!) and - for leaders who really want to take the Thrive model to the next level - we now offer individual coaching sessions.

You can watch the video below to find out more about our new Thriving Teams offerings. If you’d like to organise a workshop or session for yourself (or want to talk in more depth about the Thrive model as a whole) then please get in touch at [email protected]
