Aimee Boorman

Doing what's right for your athletes.

We explore leadership through the lens of high-performance sport by interviewing Great Coaches from around the world to try and find ideas to help all of us lead our families, our colleagues, and our teams better.

Our newsletter contains the best ideas from those interviews.

Latest Interview

Our Great Coach this week is Aimee Boorman, an artistic gymnastics coach who led the USA team at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Aimee is perhaps best known for having coached 2016 Olympic champion and 2013-2015 world champion Simone Biles, who she originally started coaching back in 2003, when Simone was only just 6 years old. Together, the pair worked for 14 World Championship and Olympic Gold medals.

(Simone notably became the first woman ever to win three straight all-around titles, and was the first gymnast to capture 10 gold medals at the World Championships).

During our fantastic interview, Aimee shared her own tradition-breaking approach to coaching, including a variety of points that will be of particular interest to those who mentor, lead, or parent younger generations.

Personal highlights include:

  • The way she has learned to tailor her communication style to suit the many age groups that she leads, and why she is never afraid to apologise when she gets something wrong.

  • How she deals with the anxiety her athletes experience in pursuit of the perfect 10 in gymnastics.

  • The steps she takes to help athletes control their emotions during high-pressure competitions and situations by bringing them back to their practice.
